Daily News is a tabloid newspaper that was founded in 1919 in New York City by Joseph Medill Patterson as the Illustrated Daily News. The newspaper became the first successful American daily printed in tabloid format. It grew to be one of the nation’s largest newspapers, with a peak circulation in the 1950s. By the 21st century, it was still a major metropolitan newspaper and remained a leading source of local news in New York City. The paper drew readers with sensational coverage of crime and scandal, and through its lurid photographs and other entertainment features. Until the 1970s, the paper was a staunch Republican publication, and espoused conservative populism. In the 1960s it began shifting its stance, and by the 1990s was a moderately liberal alternative to the right-wing rival New York Post.
The Yale Daily News Historical Archive contains digitized copies of the printed editions of the YDN dating back to 1878. The archive is open to the public and includes a searchable database of full text articles. The Yale Daily News Historical Archive was created through a generous gift from an anonymous Yale alumnus.
