Business news is an area of journalism that tracks, records, analyzes and interprets the commercial, economic, financial and governmental activities and changes that take place within societies. It is a highly specialized field that has been in existence for centuries, with many newspapers, magazines, radio and television-news shows featuring a business segment. More in-depth and specific business news may also be published in trade publications, which are often focused on a particular industry.
In the earliest days of business journalism, the journalist Daniel Defoe (author of the classic novel Robinson Crusoe) wrote about trade and commerce in his newspaper, The Daily Colonist. In the late 1880s, Charles Dow started his own stock market ticker and business news service that would eventually become the Wall Street Journal. Other famous muckraking journalists who helped shape the modern business news profession include Ida Tarbell and Paul Revere, who exposed the scandalous practices of Standard Oil in 1902.
Today, business news is found in almost all forms of media, including newspapers, magazines, TV and radio. While most general news sources offer some level of business coverage, a more focused and dedicated resource is often needed for more in-depth research into the various industries that are featured. Many trade publications exist for this purpose, and the Library of Congress maintains a helpful guide to identify these resources based on subject matter.
